The chemical composition ranges as per the ASTM/ASME standard for each grade. Grade 304 has a higher chromium content (18-20%) and a higher nickel content (8-10.5%), with an additional amount of molybdenum (2-3%) for better resistance to chloride pitting, and 316 is a variation of 304 with a higher molybdenum content. Carbon stays below 0.08% in standard grades and drops to 0.03% in the “L” variants, which is relevant for welded joints that see repeated heat cycles. Tensile strength runs at a minimum of 515 MPa for 304 and 316, with yield strength at 205 MPa and elongation of at least 35%. These figures come from ASTM A213 (seamless, for boiler and heat exchanger service) and ASTM A249 (welded, for the same application), the two standards most stainless tubing suppliers work against for pressure applications. ASTM A269 and A270 apply where hygienic or general corrosion-resistant tubing is needed instead.
